December 15, 2015
RPX Corporation (NASDAQ: RPXC) today announced that it executed agreements to secure licensing rights for more than 20 companies to the portfolio of patents owned by patent licensing company Round Rock Research, LLC. The transaction, valued at more than $100 million, is expected to close by December 31, 2015. Round Rock was formed in 2009 and subsequently acquired several thousand patents primarily related to semiconductor manufacturing and circuit technology from Micron Technology, Inc.
“This transaction demonstrates RPX’s unique ability to bring together patent market participants in complex deals, allowing companies to avoid costly litigation and efficiently reduce their risk,” said John Amster, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of RPX. “We continue to prove that our clearinghouse approach is improving the patent licensing process with transparency, scalability, and rational outcomes.”
“Working with RPX brought efficiency to this transaction which helped us achieve a result that was agreeable to many parties with varying interests,” said Gerry deBlasi, President and CEO of Round Rock Research, LLC.
The companies receiving licenses to the Round Rock portfolio represent various segments of the semiconductor ecosystem, including wafer foundries, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), fabless integrated circuit (IC) companies, consumer electronics manufacturers, and network equipment companies.
RPX will receive a fee for its work on the transaction.
