Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope
September 15, 2021
As a part of our commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion that our company’s success is built upon, RPX is pleased to honor Hispanic Heritage Month by showcasing one of the two chosen posters for the 2021 celebration. The goal of the artist, Ms. Eliana De León, a Hispanic Employment Program Manager at the Environmental Protection Agency, is to depict a message of hope and resilience.
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The Hispanic Heritage observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. Rather than last for a certain month, this date was chosen as it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence in this period and the month also ends after the Day of the Races, which is a cultural and public holiday in many Latin American countries.
