Patent litigation dynamics vary industry to industry. To enable more granular analyses of these dynamics, RPX manually reviews and categorizes the accused products in each patent case and assigns those cases a market sector.

The graph below shows a market sector breakdown for 2016-2018 by defendants added to patent cases. For NPE litigation, the top market sectors include E-Commerce and Software (32% of defendants added), Consumer Electronics and PCs (16%), and Networking (14%). For operating company litigation, the top sectors are Consumer Products (42% of defendants added) and Biotech and Pharma (21%).
